1. When USAF pilot trainees are given their 'wings' on qualifying, tradition says that they should never wear them as it is unlucky. Instead, they break the wings in two, keep one half and give the other half to someone they love.

2. The 'Broken Wing' award is granted each year to the most outstanding example of a military pilot who is able to survive, against the odds, by landing, or bringing back to base, a severely damaged aircraft.
